When a parent does not provide for the child's basic needs in their early life, dependency on other substances will result in their adult hood and often teen years. I have noticed in my psychological analysis of addicts that they tend to be more dependent, antisocial, impulsive, novelty-seeking, and depressive than the average person. Though some may argue that these traits arise from substance abuse, I argue that the traits are already present in an individual before any intake of substances is initiated. The given substance for example narcotics, only exemplify the already present qualities.
I also believe that addictions arise in impulsive people. The impulsive person is more likely to commit an irrational action as their ID presides over their Ego and Super Ego. The impulse is based of instinct which is the principle motivating force in the mental realm. I also link addiction to Thanatos (the death instinct) hence making substance abuse linked to aggression, self-destruction, and cruelty.
